Alex's Autographs

Getting the mail just got a lot more fun...

Rich's Corner

Rich, the author of "The Autograph Corner" on Stu-Man.com, has been generous enough to provide my site with his autograph updates. His updates are a great source of who is signing, who is not, et cetera. Enjoy!

Hi there,

No sports back today, but I did get poetess Pattiann Rogers back. (7412 Berkeley Circle/ Castle Rock, CO 90108-9278)

I had recently heard her read at Knox College, but had to leave during the Q & A session.  The reading had run late and ever patient Nancy had already been waiting in the hallway for a half hour.  I sent her the laminated double-sided 8x10 care of her website, and made an offhand comment saying that I was disappointed that she didn't bring any books to sell with her.  She wrote me a nice note back, explaining that it's not too feasible to when travelling by plane, and enclosed a copy of her "Splitting and Binding" volume, inscribed to me as well.  Needless to say, a "thank you note" is in order.

Hi there,

1 retired baseball yesterday (HM08):
Dave Chalk signed 2 cards.

23 in person minor league baseball autographs yesterday from the South Bend Silver Hawks playing in Burlington.  Did not see their #1 pick Jarrod Parker though last night.  It was a cold night and he was probably charting in the dugout.  Hope to pick him offf today.
Left the game in the 5th inning to attend a poetry reading at Southeastern Community College.  Quraysh Ali Lansana the Director of Black Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Studies and Creative Writing at Chicago University gave a moving reading, most of which centered around his book of Harriet Tubman Poems.  He signed that volume( "They Shall Run") and another volume of his work for me, as well as the double-sided 8x10 that I put together about him and his work.

Raining tonight.  Passed on driving to Burlington to arrive at a rain out.(Now watch, they'll play).  Did go to a poetry reading at Knox College today.  Welsh poets Peter Thabit Jones and Aeronwy Thomas (Dylan Thomas' daughter) were the featured artists.
Aeronwy signed a copy of her newest book, "Burning Bridges" and a copy of her recollections of growing up with her famous poet father "A Daughter Remembers Dylan," as well as a double sided 8x10 that I put together about her and her work.  Peter Jones signed his book "The Lizard Catchers" and an 8x10 that I put together about him and his work.

Hi there,

     Catching up on Friday-today.

     2 retired minor leaguers:
Travis Chambers signed 3 cards and sent a note
     8015 South Cook Road
     Grain Valley, MO 64029

     Rick Morris signed 3 cards:

Harvey M's update sheet.  I have misplaced it and don't have the address to share.

Saw Great Lakes in Burlington.  Got all my Loons signed but 1 homemade card for Aquaviva.  Results included 3 Bryan Morris, 5 Jamie Ortiz, 9 Garey ingram, 17 Danny Darwin (generous signer both days for my wife and I) and many other players.
Saw  Lansing in Burlington.  This team was loaded with prospects, including John Tolisano, Justin Jackson, Kevin Ahrens, Trystan Magneson, Darin Mastriani, Cody Crowell, and McDade.  I had a lot of cards for their hitting coach, Justin Mashore too, and he signed them all.

Caught West Michigan in Peoria.  former major leaguer Mark Johnson is their ptiching coach.  He signed 5 cards.  With oneonta not producing a set, I had few cards for this team.  Fortunately I discovered "Whitecap Wendy's" photos on the Flicker site.  She's very generous about posting her photos, and put on index cards I was able to make something for every player to sign.  You people who watch Tiger farm clubs in the MWL, FSL and Eastern League, check out her site.  You'll find it invaluable.  LMK what you think of it.
Not much baseball for about 8 days now.  Hopefully the mail requests will start rolling in.

Hi there,

Ryne Sandburg finally came out and signed today.  Got a couple cards signed for friends.
Got 20 cards signed for my collection and took a few more pics.  Also got 4 John Donaldson, 4 Mike Moustakas, 4 Doug Henry and a Doo-Eun Rhee among others.
If you're curious, my wife Nancy is pictured on the River Bandits website in the pic labelled "The River Bandits are back.  She's the lady in the pink coat.

Saturday, April 5, 2008

Hi everyone,

Nothing in the mail today.  Did well in person.  We went up to the Quad Cities for a Day game.  Between Nancy and I we got 4 Phillipe Aunmont (Wisconsin's #1 pick) which included a TriStar card, 2 homemade cards and the BAmerica organizational report.  Nancy got all my Peter Kozma cards signed (4 different carrds and 3 duplicates)
and between her and I we got 12 different Jaime Navarro, the Timber Rattlers pitching coach.  Got most of my River Bandits cards done, and all but three of my Timber Rattlers.  Took enough pictures too to finish my first roll for the season.
Stopped at the West Burlington Wal-Mart to catch former Viking/Patriot Chuck Foreman.  Got another card of his signed ($10) for my Vikings scrapbook.
Didn't do as well at the Bees game.  Sandburg didn't come out again and Nancy was shut out on the Peoria players that I needed.  I got 2 Mike Moustakas signed on the Bees signed, and took a few pictures.  Now the only Bees I need to finish up are Abreau and Baldoff
44 signed items for me.  Not too bad a day.

Friday, April 4, 2008

Just returned from Burlington.
A good night despite Sandburg opting not to sign again.
Got close to 60 cards signed, including 2 more Moustakas ( he came out late or he would've signed more) 4 Jason Taylor, 3 Desi Wilson, 6 Doug Henry, and about half my Burlington cards signed.  Nancy got me about 7 of the Peoria players, (Including Wilson) while standing in the Sandburg autograph line.
Nancy went to shop during the game.  Came back and said that Chuck Foreman, former Vikings running back, was signing at the Wal-mart there.  Since I refuse to set foot in the evil empire for the most part, I asked if she would mind going back there and getting me a card signed ($10).  She did.  That was an added bonus.
I guess he's signing there tomorrow from 4-8 as well.  I might have to consider getting another card or two signed.
Even if I have to step in there myself.

Joee Lazor signed 3 cards and wrote a note back.

Hi there,

1 retired minor leaguer today (HM08):

Phil Wiese signed 4 cards
825 Johns road, Apt. 133
Boerne, TX 78006

Minor League season began yesterday with an open River Bandits practice during the day and Meet the Bees in the evening.
I got about half my River Bandits signed at the practice.  Couldn't wait for Peter Kozma and some of the others to come off the field, as I had to leave at for to attend the Meet the Bees function.
Did well at Meet the Bees.  Couldn't catch them all, but between Nancy and I we got 13 Doug Henry signed and 12 Mike Moustakas, including a Baseball America cover.  Got maybe about two thirds of the team.
Today, opening night at Burlington, I was less successful.  A drizzly night.  Cold.  We waited for an hour for Sandburg to come out, but he opted to stay in the dugout in this cold weather.  As bundled up as the players were, we were lucky to get 4 of them.  John Donaldson signed 3 cards.  Would have signed more, but he was anxious to get back into the dugout.  I couldn't blame him.  We did get 7 cards signed by Desi Wilson though.
Hope the weather is better tomorrow, and Sandburg is more amenable.

Went to the Otis Wilson (Bears football) free signing in Galesburg.  Failed.  I'm signed up to take the 50 question Jeopardy quiz at 8pm, and the line was close to 400 people.  The decision was a no-brainer.  I turned around and went home.  Wish me luck on the quiz!

Hi there,

1 retired baseball yesterday:

Jack Curtis signed a baseball card (HM08).

1 retired football:

Jeff Siemon signed a card and sent back two signed 4x6
action photos of himself along with it. (HM07)

2 writers:

I went to hear poets Michelle Tarnowsky and Caroline Manring read last night.  Both signed 8x10s that I'd put together about them and their work.  Tarnowsky's was too off the wall and experimental for my taste, but Caroline Manring's work was impressive.

Got a phone call today as well that made my day.  I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and have always been a Vikings fan. Tommy Mason, the Viking's first ever 1st round draft choice called me today to ask how he should sign the laminated 8x10 that I sent him and whether I wanted it personalized or not. How many former athletes would care enough to call and ask.  I was pleasantly shocked and surprised.

1 current baseball:

2 retired baseball players:

Andrew J Tomasic signed an index card (HM07).

And... An outstanding in person success to report.

Nancy and I went up to Iowa City last night to attend a reading and book signing by Sarah Vowell.
If you like history and current events served up with wry humor; she's a must read for you.
She signed her books (I have all four of them):

ASSASSINATION VACATION, my favorite of hers.
RADIO ON her first effort, a diary of a year listening to the radio.  A fun read, especially if you like music and/or reading her bashing of right wing talk show wackos.
THE PARTLY CLOUDY PATRIOT and
TAKE THE CANNOLI.

She also signed a double-sided laminated 8x10 that I put together about her and her work.
A fun evening, even though we got home about midnight.

3 retired baseball back today:

Former Yankee Archie Moore not only signed my index card, but sent back a 4x6 signed B&W postcard as an extra (HM07).

Billy Ed Smith signed a card and an index card (HM07).

Nate Smith (5 games with the Orioles in 1962) signed an index card and wrote a wonderful note back.(HM07)  He tried to squeeze a lot on the index card, including a new address, Harvey.  If I read it right (and it's hard to) it's
3033 Continental Parkway
Atlanta, GA 30331

It's responses like his and Archie Moore's that make writing to the lesser known players fun.  Like I remind them in my autograph request.  Just to have made it to the majors is something that all professional ballplayers strive for, yet few achieve.

1 minor leaguer:

Kevin Gunter signed 2 pictures care of the Dayton Dragons.

I also attended a poetry reading by G. C Waldrep at Knox College yesterday evening and left with two signed volumes of his work as well as a double sided 8X10 that I put together about him and his work for him to sign.

1 major leaguer:

2 minor leaguers:

Blake Wood signed 2 pictures care of the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
Ray Burris signed and personalized 2 cards care of the West Michigan Whitecaps.  This was a surprise.  In person this guy was brusque, rude and on willing to sign one card, only if you waited for him to come out AFTER the game.  A friend of mine who used to be a batboy in Burlington was waiting after the game for him, and the Burlington clubbie said. "I'll go in and get it signed for you."  Burris was so petty as to ask the clubbie to describe my friend and what he was wearing, so that he wouldn't sign another card for him on the way out.  So, to get two signed back in the mail?  Who figured?

Paul Coleman signed a couple pictures and wrote a note back care of the Great Lakes Loons.

Mark Roberts (former Clinton Lumberking) signed a couple pictures care of an Independent League team.  This one had evidently laid at the bottom of a postal truck for awhile.  The envelope was scuffed and dirty and the pictures were creased.  Salvagable though.  I forgot which team Roberts was on, but the envelope had a St.Paul postmark.

1 poet:

Also did most of my South Bend, including two Romanczyk jersey cards, and took 14 pictures.  Romanczyk also signed a double-sided 8x10 collage that I put together from pictures on the Stanford website.
